Trying to find the time for classes, studying between work and family obligations and finding a program offering that fits your needs nearby is often enough to deter even the most enthusiastic of potential students. The reality of getting a degree simply doesn’t seem doable in many cases, but Webster University is changing that perception. “Getting a degree as an adult is absolutely attainable,” said Dr. Beth Stroble, president of Webster University. “In fact, across the country, a major component of the future of higher education will be adult learners, I believe, more so than the stereotypical young college student living in a dorm. The jobs today are not the jobs of the future, and, increasingly, adults will need to retool.” Founded in 1915, the academic institution has always endeavored to do what’s necessary to fill a need. Today, Webster University has grown into a network of campuses around the globe, offering on-campus, night and online course options to allow maximum flexibility to its students. Spanning four continents, there are over 40 campuses here in the United States. The Charleston campus has been helping students reach their academic goals for over 30 years. A current selection of degree programs like a master of arts in counseling, master of health administration and master of business administration and a graduate certificate in organizational development help fill the need for degree programs that are significant in the local economy. The school also offers two undergraduate degree-completion programs in Charleston: a bachelor of arts in management and a bachelor of arts in psychology. “Webster University’s quality education programs attach a stamp of excellence to a degree, but, in addition to that, most of the programs are portable, so if life happens and you move or transfer, you can continue pursuing your degree from anywhere,” Dr. Stroble explained. The university has been a pioneer of online graduate programs since the 1990s and has since remained on the cutting edge of educational technology. Today, students can connect from anywhere in the world to a class via video. By Anne Shuler Toole “They can now take advantage of being connected to a professor and a class no matter where they are or what classes are available near them. Can you imagine what kind of doors that can open?” she smiled. Nearly all of the Charleston campus professors are adjunct faculty, practicing what they preach and continuing to develop real-world experience and connections – and essentially enhancing the quality of their instruction. As the need for specific jobs in the Lowcountry continues to evolve, and as today’s jobs continue to transform, Stroble knows that Webster University will also need to evolve and transform in order to continue meeting those needs. “Our technology and degree programs will continue changing as well to best prepare students for their careers. Luckily, we know how to adapt and change, and we do it well,” Dr. Stroble said. “For anyone who wants to pursue a degree but is concerned that commitments like a job, a family or location could be barriers, Webster University can help them reach their goals.” To learn more about programs and admission requirements, visit webster.edu/Charleston or call 843-760-1324.
