Stay Prepared: Be Hurricane Aware

Posted by MPM Leave a Comment

Hurricane Hugo approaches the South Carolina coast in September 1989.
Here we go again! It’s time to stay tuned to weather forecasts. Not just to see how those frequent afternoon thunderstorms will impact our outdoor activities but to monitor the tropics for the latest hurricane updates. Hurricane season has begun and runs from June 1 until Nov. 30.

Decades ago, Lowcountry residents did not have the benefit of advance warnings like we do today. A big dark cloud on the horizon could’ve just meant an afternoon thunderstorm, but it also might have signaled the approach of a hurricane. Now we can track the storm’s path for days or even a week in advance of its eventual landfall. That gives us plenty of time to be concerned but, more importantly, to be ready if our area is affected.

Those of us who have lived here for a while know that we have dodged the bullet quite a few times over the past several years. We’ve had some near-misses as well as a few tropical storms, but it’s certain that our luck will eventually run out. Although there is no definitive way to predict this far out in time when or if a hurricane will hit the Lowcountry, we are well overdue for a major storm. It’s been 37 years since the notorious Hurricane Hugo wreaked havoc here. So, if you haven’t already done so during the proverbial calm before the storm, now is the time to form a plan as to how you and your property will confront the next one.

Hurricane Preparedness Checklist

RISK FROM WIND AND WATER

  • Know if you live in an area prone to storm surge flooding
  • Make sure your home is hurricane proof with storm shutters
  • Get an insurance checkup and document your possessions

DEVELOP AN EVACUATION PLAN

  • Plan several routes
  • If you don’t have a vehicle, check with local officials to see what transportation options are available

ASSEMBLE DISASTER SUPPLIES

  • If sheltering in place, have enough nonperishable food, water and medicine to last each person a minimum of three days
  • Keep a battery-powered radio and flashlights on hand, as electricity and water could be out for weeks

RELY ON FORECAST INFORMATION

  • Stay up-to-date from the National Hurricane Center and your local National Weather Service office
  • Know your alerts, especially the difference between a Watch and a Warning

GET MOVING WHEN A STORM THREATENS

  • Cover windows, and secure doors and loose items
  • Have medical supplies, charged phones, bags and vehicles ready to go

Other NOAA advice includes staying protected during storms and using caution after storms, such as returning home only when directed.
