Flying High: Gerety Family Bridges the Distance Through Trust, Commitment

Posted by MPM Leave a Comment

Patrick Gerety, owner of East Cooper Auto Pros, standing with his wife Courtney and their daughter Aislin by the Pineapple Fountain at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park.

For Patrick and Courtney Gerety, marriage has always been rooted in commitment, but over the past 11 years, that commitment has taken on a deeper meaning shaped by military service, entrepreneurship and family life.

Courtney joined the United States Air Force in September 2015, already married to Patrick at the time. Together, they talked through how military life would reshape their future, bringing both opportunities and challenges. But as they navigated through long separations and Courtney being far from home, the daunting transition instead became a shared decision grounded in optimism and trust. While the constant change required a level of dedication beyond the norm, their bond strengthened.

Today, Courtney manages an entire aircraft engine repair shop within her squadron of 60 airmen and airwomen. Her service has taken her across the globe, with assignments in distant places like Guam, Hawaii, Australia, Germany and Alaska.

Time apart is one of the hardest realities of military life. Courtney’s first deployment lasted six months, and her second official deployment stretched to seven months, beginning just two days before the family purchased East Cooper Auto Pros. These deployments and assignments place her far from her husband and their daughter, Aislin.

Back home, Patrick has the responsibility of running East Cooper Auto Pros while also managing the household and caring for their daughter. It’s a demanding balance, and without a clear roadmap, he’s had to adapt quickly, stepping fully into both parental roles while keeping his business running smoothly. His days are nonstop, filled with responsibilities that don’t wait. Each task is quickly replaced by another, making consistency and focus essential.

Through it all, Aislin has become the most important part of the family dynamic. When her mom is away, she makes a conscious effort to help her dad however she can. From tackling homework to making time for something fun after work, their routine is centered around teamwork and positivity.

Despite the challenges, the family has stayed connected. Technology plays a crucial role, allowing them to communicate regularly even when separated by continents. For Patrick and Courtney, communication and patience are the foundation of everything. They prioritize daily conversations, ensuring their relationship and family remain strong regardless of distance and the stress of daily challenges.

Patrick approaches each day with a focus on staying present, a mindset that helps him manage stress. Some things need to be planned and maintained, but by staying adaptable, he’s able to keep everything centralized and at the forefront, which helps curb any dramatics that may arise when the stress keeps compiling. Combined with Courtney’s emphasis on constant communication, their approach is simple but powerful: “talk a lot, smile often, be happy and life is good.”

With their anniversary coming up, they’ll be traveling to Mexico to celebrate their relationship and all they have achieved. Their journey is a testament to partnership in its truest form. Built on sacrifice, trust and unwavering commitment to each other and their family, they continue moving forward together, no matter the obstacle.
