long the eastern seaboard
between Myrtle Beach and Savan-
nah, it seems that just about every
road dead-ends into a beach and each
sun-splashed, sandy getaway has its
own unique aura. It’s a place rich with
history where folks walk, bike or putt-
putt along in their golf cart down quiet, palmetto-lined
streets. Seasoned chefs and their eager understudies prepare
creative meals, drawing interest from the Travel Channel
and the Food Network every few months. Everywhere you
turn, people are smiling, holding open doors and say-
ing please and thank you. The sweet scent of the ocean
pairs perfectly with the aroma of a Lowcountry boil, and,
as what I call the Charleston cologne wafts gently in the
direction of your nose, you ask yourself: Where else in the
world could I possibly want to be?
It’s the Charleston conundrum: Where are we sup-
posed to vacation if we already live in paradise?
That’s the question Mount Pleasant resident Dick
Casey’s parents asked themselves many years ago.
