E

xperience is an important factor

for East Cooper residents who want to make

sure they are carrying the proper amount of

coverage on their homes and automobiles,

and that’s one of the major attributes offered

by Tony Pope and State Farm Insurance.

Pope recently opened a new location in Mount

Pleasant, and he’s dedicated to providing the same qual-

ity service he’s offered his cus-

tomers in Summerville for more

than two decades. He’s backed by one of the nation’s

top insurance companies.

“State Farm Insurance is the number one auto insurer

in the state, and more

people buy homeown-

ers insurance from State

Farm than any other

insurer,” Pope pointed

out, adding that the

company has been

the number one auto

insurer in the United

States since 1942.

A graduate of the

University of South

Carolina, Pope knows

the meaning of be-

ing a successful State

Farm agent.

“We have 15

licensed agents in our

agency alone who bring

years of service to our

clients and to the community. It’s important to have an

agent who is familiar with the area and who can respond

quickly if you suffer a catastrophic event,” he said.

“Going with the cheapest rate isn’t always the best,”

Pope continued. “You need an agent who can explain the

basics of insurance and be sure you have adequate coverage

to replace your home and its contents.”

Mount Pleasant’s population continues to grow rapidly,

and it’s important for insurance agents to be knowledge-

able about the needs of the town’s residents and others

who live East of the Cooper.

“It is critical that homeowners have hurricane and wind

coverage. Many policies exclude wind and hail or have very

high deductibles,” said Pope. “It’s important to understand

exactly what you are paying for and to know what deduct-

ibles your policy has for wind and hail.”

Homeowners in the Lowcountry also should be con-

cerned about flood insurance, a necessity even for homes

that aren’t in a flood zone. They must be concerned about

storm surges that accompany hurricanes and flooding that

occurs as a result of heavy rains.

Being aware of your options is crucial because, obvi-

ously, you can’t buy insurance for an unforeseen event

after it occurs. In many

cases, you must be

insured a month in

advance. For example,

flood insurance doesn’t

go into effect until

after a 30-day waiting

period. Once the coast

is under a hurricane or

tropical storm watch or

warning, it is too late to

purchase homeowners

or renters insurance.

State Farm rewards

its customers who in-

sure their home as well

as their cars through the

company with a multi-

line policy discount,

and consumers also can

save money by taking common safety precautions and

using items such as deadbolts and fire extinguishers. State

Farm’s claims network, one of the largest in the world,

can be accessed online or by phone.
