Taking Control – A Proactive Approach to Health Care

Posted by MPM Leave a Comment

With the controversy over health care reform swirling around us, we’ve somehow been convinced that health insurance companies know better than doctors. They tell us how often we can be sick, when we are well, when we are allowed to see a doctor and which one to see. We don’t visit a doctor until we have symptoms, or we wait until the symptoms are severe before we drag ourselves to his or her office. This attitude is a product of the mind-set of health insurance companies – don’t do anything until you’re really sick. They are dictating how good and how bad our health will be.

It’s time for us to take control of our own health, a word defined by the World Health Organization as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” We have strayed far from this definition. Most of us have taken a reactionary rather than a proactive approach to health. Traditional medicine focuses on symptoms, but it’s more geared to reactive rather than proactive care. You have a cold or a headache; take these meds. You have appendicitis or cancer; cut it out.

Traditional medicine has made amazing advances in surgical intervention and emergency care, and it has an arsenal of pharmaceuticals to throw at practically every condition. Yet, in many cases, the help is more harmful than the actual condition. What are our options?

One alternative to traditional health care is chiropractic. If you were thinking that chiropractic is just for back and neck cracking, you would be wrong. Although it can be used for reactive care, chiropractic focuses on the healing power of the body and embraces a proactive approach to health. It centers on optimizing the functions of the central nervous system, the only major system totally surrounded by bone. I suppose that, along with the fact that it controls every operation in the body, makes it your most important system.

Chiropractic keeps the nervous system optimized by maximizing joint movement in the spine and in other joints and by removing interference that suppresses the signals traveling throughout various parts of the body. When your nervous system is optimized, your immune system, your digestive system and your entire body work better.

Chiropractic, therefore, isn’t simply bone cracking. It is a noninvasive, natural method that helps the body reach its maximum potential. It can help with conditions such as ear infections, colic and bed-wetting, as well as arthritis, asthma, autism and Alzheimer’s. It can help with pregnancy and those who want to become pregnant. It can benefit practically any person of any age. Chiropractic helps your nervous system operate at its most efficient level.
