A Local Favorite for Furnishings, Next to New

A Local Favorite for Furnishings, Next to New

Whether you’re buying or selling, finding your “go-to” home furnishings consignment store can be a challenge. Sellers are looking for a reliable and easy consigning process, and buyers seek good quality, affordable items. Next To New has found a balance that satisfies both, giving sellers a good return on their investment while providing buyers with great quality and pricing. Word has gotten out about the store, open since 2010, and owner Catherine Moorehead attributes its status as a local favorite to good customer service and quality items.

“I have five wonderful employees here,” Moorehead explained. “We all work hard and enjoy what we do; if there’s an opportunity to go the extra mile to make someone’s shopping or consignment experience better, we certainly do it.”

Next To New, located in The Shoppes at Brickyard, boasts 5,000 square feet of gently used furniture, ranging from sofas to dining sets, coffee and end tables, desks, dressers, area rugs, occasional chairs and more. There is also a variety of home décor items, including linens, dinnerware, crystal, lamps, light fixtures and one-of-a-kind pieces. These items are only accepted if they are clean and in good to great condition.

“Whether you’re looking for a stunning, high-end dining room set, furniture for a student apartment or rental, or just the right accessory for your home, we have a great selection to choose from,” she said. “There are many brand-name pieces – Broyhill, Pottery Barn, Thomasville and Ethan Allen, to name a few – but we also carry items that are wonderful candidates for transformation into an updated and fabulous piece with a new lease on life.”

One of the ways Next To New helps its customers is through its Wish Book. To save you the trouble of browsing the store every week or so in search of a specific piece, you can enter your request into the Wish Book, and

Next To New will contact you if that item comes into the store. New arrivals are also posted on their Facebook page on a regular basis. Next To New takes care of its sellers as well, making the process of reselling furniture and furnishings easy. With a straightforward structure, sellers are offered a 12-week consignment period, with price reductions at specified intervals. Next To New uses a website where sellers can keep track of their personal active inventory, price and status as well as expirations and balances.

After 12 weeks, expired items that customers do not want back are donated to Habitat for Humanity. Some items are given to East Cooper Community Outreach or to families in need through church groups.

“It’s important for us to give back to the community. When something doesn’t sell here, we would much rather see it go toward a good cause or help someone in need,” Moorehead said. “Also, we’re all dog lovers and welcome well-behaved dogs into the store. We send a monthly check to Palmetto Paws from donations collected for fresh baked cookies we have in-store.”

Ultimately, the combination of friendly customer service, quality items at affordable prices, a straightforward consignment process and a community mind-set have proven to be what brings customers back for more, and why Next To New continues to be a local favorite.
