Dr. Cynthia Garner opened Garner Family Dentistry on Chuck Dawley Boulevard in 2007 and has been providing family dental services in Mount Pleasant ever since. She loves taking care of her patients and seeing the impact she has made in their lives.
“It’s a real joy to see immediate results and the change in people’s self-esteem,” she said. “They sometimes come in feeling down about their appearance, and, when they leave, they have a new look on life and a new smile.”
The loyalty and devotion between her and her patients goes both ways. Dr. Garner said patients value the friendliness of the staff, the fact that they keep on schedule and put the patients’ needs first.
“We give them all the options available and let them make the decision. People appreciate the honesty and they trust you and often refer their friends and family, which is a huge compliment to us,” she said.
Dr. Garner sees patients of all ages, from children to seniors. The practice offers a wide range of family dental care, including checkups and hygiene visits, fillings, crowns, dentures, fluoride treatments and sealants to protect young teeth, as well as cosmetic services such as veneers, implants and tooth whitening for adults.
Staying current with the latest in dentistry is very important to Dr. Garner, who completes approximately 100 hours of continuing education every year. She also uses the latest technology in her practice, from digital panoramic X-rays of the entire mouth to intraoral cameras which allow her to see what’s going on inside the mouth and to show patients firsthand what they are facing. This helps them make a decision on how they want to treat problem areas.
New technology both improves the patient experience and the care she and her team can provide.
“It gives us more information, whereas before we couldn’t see as much with the older technology,” said Dr. Garner. “For the patients, it gives them immediate feedback of the diagnosis while exposing them to less radiation due to fewer X-rays.”
Dr. Garner has brought the same passion for dental care to other parts of the world on mission trips to the Dominican Republic with her dental school class and to Honduras with her church. Both of these trips allowed her to provide services to underserved populations who don’t have regular access to dental care. “It’s a great experience and makes you appreciate what you have here in the US.”
Dr. Garner is originally from Omaha, Nebraska, where she attended dental school at Creighton University. Following graduation, she was selected for an intensive residency program at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she earned an advanced degree in General Dentistry. In that program, she focused on advanced clinical dentistry and enhanced her skills as a general practitioner. With these skills and the experience managing numerous dental practices in the Midwest, Dr. Garner now lives with her husband and two teenage daughters on Daniel Island.
“Dentistry is a wonderful profession that develops lifelong relationships with patients and their families. It’s an honor and a privilege,” she said.
