The Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant’s 40th Annual Soccer Classic is scheduled to kick off next month at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Charleston County School District 2 Stadium (Robert Hayes Stadium at Wando High School). The milestone event looks to continue its legacy as the premier kickoff tournament for Lowcountry high school soccer.
The tournament, which began in 1984, has evolved into a prestigious showcase for emerging athletic talent, featuring both varsity and junior varsity divisions for boys and girls teams from across the Lowcountry. Over four decades, the tournament has grown from a local competition into a celebrated regional tradition along the East Coast.
“Reaching our 40th anniversary is a testament to the enduring impact of this tournament on our community,” said David Kent, president of the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant. “What started as a modest local event has become a launching pad for countless young athletes and a vital fundraiser for important causes in our area.”
All proceeds from the tournament will support various charitable initiatives, including:
- Backpack Buddies – Food for deserving grade school students in the East Cooper area for the weekend.
- Happy Feet – Free shoes to deserving grade school students in the East Cooper area. (The Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant has provided more than 5,100 pairs of shoes since starting this program in 2007.)
- Dictionaries – Provides a dictionary for every third grader in the East Cooper area. (The Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant has provided more than 28,500 dictionaries since starting the program in 1999.)
- Charities – Grants vary for local charities, including ECCO, East Cooper Meals on Wheels, Water Mission International and East Cooper Faith Network.
- Scholarships – Four-year scholarships to local high school students.
