When cabin fever calls for a day trip, the go-to destination is Bistro 217 on Pawleys Island. Seating is available either inside or in the enclosed and climate-controlled courtyard surrounded by air plants, succulents and an ambiently-lit backdrop that creates an elegant atmosphere.
Incorporated in the Zen-like space is a newly renovated bar where regulars and visitors enjoy cocktails like the Grayman’s Gimlet with elderflower; the Arrogant & Shabby with Botanist gin; the Lavender “French 75”; or El Jefe, a tequila espresso martini. The curated wine list is on point with sparkling wines, whites such as French Burgundy and Pouilly Fuisse and reds like Cotes du Rhone, Sangiovese and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. An extensive variety of craft, domestic and premium beers is also available.
Eclectic bar menu items include the bistro burger, crunchy Thai shrimp salad, Asian ribs, fish tacos, shrimp curry, Bangkok tempura chicken with five pepper jelly or the crowd favorite crab nachos.
In the dining room, start with an appetizer such as the hearty and flavorful tomato, crab and jalapeno soup, fried lobster wontons, baked brie or bistro burrata. Pro tip: it’s impossible to choose just one, so the best strategy is to order several starters and share.
The same is true with entree options like trout almondine, braised short ribs, filet mignon with seared shrimp, horseradish-encrusted pork schnitzel, Korean chili-seared salmon, local flounder, rack of venison, the bone-in prime porterhouse or pan-seared lobster, shrimp and scallops with sundried tomatoes and scallions in parmesan bechamel over fettuccine. For lighter fare, choose from an array of salads including a classic Caesar, wedge or pear.
Polish the experience off with a duo creme brulee, coconut pie or warm chocolate walnut brownie and a glass of port. Go hungry and leave happy.
