Originally from Mount Pleasant, Dr. Matthew Mellin attended the University of South Carolina where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Early on in his career, however, he realized that although he loved the problem-solving side of engineering, he wanted to work with his hands, helping people directly and making a difference. As dentistry felt like the perfect mix of art and science, he went on to study at the Medical University of South Carolina.
After finishing dental school in 2024, Dr. Mellin joined Wando Family Dentistry. “It’s been a great place to start my career,” he said. “Dr. (Cason) Hund and the whole team have been so supportive through the transition from school to practicing full-time. And now that I get to practice in the same community that shaped me, taking care of the people who helped raise me is something I don’t take for granted.”
So far, the most rewarding aspect of his career, he said, is “When a patient realizes how much their health or appearance has improved, and you can actually see their confidence come back. That moment makes all the hard work worth it.”
Another exciting component of working with Wando Family Dentistry, Dr. Mellin said, is that for the last nine years the practice has won the Best Of award and this year they have placed as one of the best. “What sets the practice apart is a focus on listening to the patients,” Dr. Mellin explained. “Every person who walks in has their own concerns, goals and priorities, and we build their treatment plan with those things in mind. We always start with their overall health, addressing things like cavities, gum disease or infections first. Once we have that healthy foundation, we talk about what they want next whether it’s improving function, enhancing their smile or maintaining the overall condition of their oral health.”
He continued, “I think people appreciate that their treatment plan is truly centered around their needs and wants. They feel heard and that makes all the difference. Considering the current climate, it can be challenging to find accessible health care while advocating for yourself and we make it an everyday priority to create a setting that meets the needs of all.”
Dr. Mellin added, “To me, being one of ‘the best’ really comes down to trust. It means people believe in the care we provide and know we’re putting their health and well-being first, every single time. Having the support of the community both Dr. Hund and I grew up in is something we don’t take lightly. Receiving this recognition year after year is incredibly humbling, and it’s a constant reminder of why we love what we do.”
