The importance of good nutrition and sharing a meal with others is not lost on George Roberts, president and CEO of East Cooper Meals on Wheels. Roberts and his team are looking forward to November’s Mount Pleasant Lifestyle Expo to promote their mission to various community members.
“The Expo sounds like a great way to bring the community together while helping to spread the word and provide support to local organizations,” Roberts said.
Recently, ECMOW has been concentrating on a new initiative within the organization known as “Food is Medicine.” This program means the addition of meals that are healthier – lower sugar, sodium, fat and cholesterol and higher protein and fiber.
“While these meals are more costly, we know that over time, these healthier options will improve the overall health and quality of life for our recipients,” Roberts explained. “Raising the necessary funds and transitioning our meals is our major current focus.”
An integral part of East Cooper for more than 33 years, Roberts raved about his volunteer base: more than 400 individuals who passionately believe in serving their neighbors and seeking financial support. Beyond receiving a balanced meal, Meals on Wheels recipients benefit from the relationships formed with volunteers. The daily interaction with someone who cares and who will serve as an advocate for other needs that arise is invaluable, especially for those living alone or far away from family.
“We are looking to serve more people, and we want people to know that our services are available to anyone regardless of age or income,” Roberts noted. “You just have to be homebound and unable to prepare meals. This can even be for a short duration during recovery from surgery or illness.”
