In many ways, 2018 could be considered a banner year for Wes Sellew. The loan officer joined a new bank, was named Best Loan Officer by the readers of Mount Pleasant Magazine, and he’s in the running for a “Man of the Year” award.
With more than 17 years of experience in the mortgage business and the privilege of being named Best Loan Officer for the past five years, Sellew knows the importance of providing quality service and delivering results in a burgeoning industry.
That’s why, when the opportunity presented itself to join Renasant Bank, Sellew was attracted to the chance to reach more clients with a company that has been in business for 112 years. The Charleston division that he helped open in March 2018 was Renasant Bank’s first operation in South Carolina – and has already won second place in the Best Mortgage Company category.
“The main driving factor was the ability to close more loans for the people I talk with on a daily basis,” Sellew said about his decision to work for a new mortgage company. “My net goes out much wider than it did before to include construction lending as well as private portfolio lending for doctors, attorneys and CPAs.”
Sellew attributes the work of his talented team as the force behind being able to offer the best services at the lowest cost.
“Having the same team with me has made this a seamless transition,” he said.
With the multilayers that go into writing a mortgage, from credit and underwriting approval to appraisals and closings, Sellew credits this award to the dedicated individuals in his office.
“People keep referring their clients to us,” he said with gratitude, considering the competitive real estate market that makes the area a desirable location for mortgage companies.
In addition to recognition in his professional life, Sellew was also nominated by the Charleston chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for the “Man of the Year” award.
He said it is an honor to be selected for this award, which is an annual fundraiser for LLS in support of local blood cancer survivors. The 10-week philanthropic campaign kicks off at the end of February, and the candidate whose team raises the most funds will be named Man or Woman of the Year.
“It is a friendly competition among nominees, but we have one goal in mind: to raise money for LLS,” Sellew said.
In recent years, the Charleston chapter has raised more than $1 million during the campaign.
Originally from Hilton Head Island, Sellew moved to the Charleston area in 2005. He and his wife of 13 years live in Mount Pleasant with their two boys, ages 8 and 5, who play soccer, golf, basketball and are on a swim team. The family enjoys going to Patriots Point and Sullivan’s Island.
“The town is awesome because it offers everything from the beach to golf and a lot of outdoor activities,” Sellew said.
