Achieving a perfect balance of being personable, professional and passionate, Kim Coleman, a Mount Pleasant native, has made a significant impact in the world of beauty both locally and nationally. She has led her company, Vanity Salon, to widespread acclamation and praise. Residents throughout Mount Pleasant habitually regard her as the premier beautician, voting for her and her company in the “Best of Mount Pleasant” categories year after year.
Displaying no sign of slowing down, Coleman finds gratification in the fact that Vanity Salon has been voted Best Hair Salon and one of the Best Tanning Salons once again. With mounting success, one cannot help but wonder what it is that Coleman and her fellow stylists do that put them in the forefront in their craft.
“It’s definitely the staff that sets us apart. … I think it really shows, and our clients can tell when they are in the salon that we are just a fun group of people who share the same passion for hair, makeup and beauty as we do for one another.”
For Coleman, the catalyst that propels her success is her colleagues and friends. They not only enjoy working together, but the competitive environment that Coleman has facilitated drives her and her fellow beauticians to be pioneers in the world of cosmetics.
“We enjoy being around each other, improving ourselves, looking for the latest trends and encouraging each other to be innovative,” Coleman said.
Commenting once more on the “truly amazing talent” that Coleman has surrounded herself with, she reiterates that camaraderie and a sense of family permeate Vanity Salon. She enjoys what she does and the people she does it with.
“In addition to the daily involvement with our customers, we have been backstage at the Miss America pageant for the past five years. We’ve also done work during Fashion Week, and annually we do about 250 weddings. I guess you could say I stay pretty busy.”
Coleman’s resolution remains steadfast – her desire to assist and invest in anyone who reaches out to her is what powers her achievements.
“I just want to make the customer feel happy. It really feels great to make the customer feel good about themselves. That’s at the heart of why I do what I do. I love making someone’s day and bringing a smile to their face.”
There is clearly a reciprocity to Coleman’s investment in her clients. Coleman recounts that one of the things that thrills her is knowing how many of her clients have been with her from her budding years as a stylist.
“It’s very affirming and encouraging seeing my investment in people be reflected back to me. It means a lot that my clients come back to me and put their trust in me year after year,” she said.
Coleman is a powerful woman who has found remarkable success in her pursuit of a dream and passion that she explains “has always been there, ever since I can remember.” She never allows a chaotic schedule to carry her away from what drives her. Her relationship with people – her fellow stylists, friends and coworkers as well as her clients – is clearly a priority. Coleman and her team at Vanity Salon have garnered so much acclaim because they care about the craft, they care about each other and they care about their clients.
