McCay Kiddy isn’t your ordinary CPA firm. They’re different – historically different. Your typical small-to-medium-sized CPA firm primarily builds its business off of the annual tax return. It’s a passive, once-a-year transaction. For McCay Kiddy, the accounting business is much more than that – it’s about building a client relationship and cultivating a lasting and impactful connection the other 364 days of the year.
“We want to change the business model that the industry has operated under for the past 30 years,” said Justin Kiddy, who, along with his wife, Melissa, are the company’s partners. “Folks should be getting year-round solutions from their CPAs. They should be getting financial insight into how to grow their business, how to have enough working capital and have help predicting their future financial direction and needs. For a large part, our industry has left the consumer behind in many areas of need outside of the annual tax return. Our business model and focus is here to correct that.”
Justin and Melissa have more than 35 years of combined experience in the accounting industry. Their complementary expertise allows them to offer an array of options, including tax and consulting services, bookkeeping, outsourced CFO and audit services.
It’s a team effort at McCay Kiddy. With 21 employees, they take a collaborative approach to building personal relationships with their clients. They do this by assigning dedicated teams to specific projects, which allows for person-to-person connection. This approach creates a continuity of service because the same team works together, giving them the opportunity to build a history with the client who benefits from this relationship.
While the team responds to a broad range of client needs, they don’t simply answer questions and hand off financial documents and returns to their clients. The McCay Kiddy team takes it a step further by embodying the heart of a teacher.
“We are trying to make our work with clients and the services we provide a teachable moment,” said Melissa. “We strive to have our clients understand the process and the system. Without that base foundation, it is challenging to grasp the direction and advice I am giving them as their outsourced CFO.”
Their personable, collaborative culture extends beyond the walls of the office; it also resonates in the community. They are active participants in Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program and have also hosted school-supply drives and sponsored a number of nonprofits like Ronald McDonald House and Carolina Youth Development Center.
As of the new year, McCay Kiddy’s presence in Charleston has expanded. They have opened a new office in North Charleston, giving them the opportunity to provide their specialized approach to businesses and individuals further inland from the coastline.
“A lot of small-to-medium businesses still aren’t getting what they need from their CPAs, and we want to meet that need,” said Justin. “By opening our new office, we want to make our company and our services more accessible to other areas of the Charleston region. It’s about providing the business owner with solutions to financially manage and grow their business. It’s a long-term relationship.”
“Our business model is really centered around having the heart of a teacher,” Melissa reiterated. “At the end of the day, we want to educate our clients and help them win financially.”
