Finding out what’s on the minds of canines and cats who reside in Mount Pleasant always keeps me on my toes. That’s why for this edition of Pet on the Street, I asked aspiring writer and dog whisperer Sophie Rose to help me out.
As always, my biggest concern was whether we could find a furry friend who would be open to talking with us in public, as usually our four-legged buddies are motormouths at home but tight-lipped when out and about.
As Sophie and I headed to Waterfront Park, we weren’t sure what dogs would be there, or if we would make any new friends that day. But we were excited to meet a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Gatsby who started chatting with Sophie almost immediately. The conversation went something like this:
1. Do you enjoy living in Charleston?
Yes, I love it here! Before I moved back here, I lived in China with my mom and dad. I love Charleston so much more than China! The people there weren’t very friendly towards me. We lived in a high-rise apartment, and I couldn’t go out on walks without going in the elevator, which was scary because most people didn’t like dogs and so they shouted at me and my mom.
2. What are your favorite places in Charleston?
Well, I love staying at home, but I also enjoy going to visit my nana, aunt, uncle and little cousins in Oyster Point. We also go for walks in my grandparents’ backyard in Dunes West, because it’s super big and has a pool! In addition, I like going over to my mom’s friend’s house, because my girlfriend lives there. Her mom is super nice too!
3. How do you feel about having a little sister?
Well, my four-legged sister can be annoying at times, but I love her. She can be naughty at times too, as in chewing on furniture and biting people. She’s very energetic, loves belly rubs just like me and looks almost exactly like me! Even though she’s a different breed of spaniel, a cocker, she’s just as cute as I am. I have another little sister too, named Sophie, just like you! She’s a human, but she still loves me like I’m a human. She gives me great belly rubs all the time and plays with me!
4. What is your favorite toy that your younger sisters have/had?
Well, my spaniel sister Lulu, I love her pink lamb named Lovie. She’s kind of destroyed it, but it’s still cute. I love pink toys, like the toy car that my human sister Sophie had when she was little. It was a big car, and instead of her playing with it, she would push me around in it. It made me feel like a king, which I am, and my mom would laugh and take pictures to show my dad. She still has the picture of me in the car, with Sophie pushing it around the house. My favorite toys that I have are a cupcake and a hedgehog. My mom keeps them up high though, so that Lulu doesn’t chew on them.
