In our charming town, where the air is slightly sweet and slightly salty and the warm embrace of community wraps around every corner, motherhood takes on many shapes and forms. From the bustling streets to the serene parks, the spirit of motherhood thrives in the hearts of women who navigate its beautiful complexities with grace, resilience and unwavering love. Today, we celebrate the myriad seasons of motherhood with stories of local women, each one a unique tribute to the strength and unity of our community.
Season of Adversity
Cori Toto’s journey through motherhood is a testament to the extraordinary strength and resilience that mothers possess. Raising two beautiful children, Toto’s path took an unexpected turn when her son Bowen was born with a rare genetic disorder. Bowen’s condition, marked by a unique chromosomal makeup, presented significant challenges from the beginning.
In the NICU, Toto and her family faced the daunting reality of Bowen’s medical complexities: hearing loss, a cleft palate, heart issues, aspiration and potential developmental delays. The journey ahead was filled with uncertainty and fear, as Toto and her husband grappled with the overwhelming prospect of the unknown. Yet, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Toto and her family made a powerful decision — to embark on a journey of love, strength and unwavering determination to help Bowen thrive.
With a relentless commitment to providing Bowen the best possible care and support, Toto and her family embraced the challenge head-on. They learned American Sign Language (ASL) after Bowen’s official diagnosis of severe bilateral hearing loss, ensuring that he had the tools to communicate and express himself fully. Despite the hurdles they face, Toto finds solace and strength in the unbreakable bond that exists between her children. Watching them grow together, supporting and caring for one another, is a source of immeasurable joy and pride for Toto — a reminder that love knows no bounds and that, together, they can conquer any obstacle that comes their way.
In addressing other moms in our community, Toto wants them to remember that “things happen for a reason. You are their world, and they follow your lead. Give them all you can.”
Season of Grief
Emily Cadwell’s journey through motherhood is marked by the profound depths of loss and the courageous pursuit of healing and overcoming. When Cadwell’s second child was only 4 months old, she lost her father unexpectedly. Only five days after his passing, she herself was diagnosed with a rare cancer.
As she navigates the complexities of grief while raising her two children, now ages 7 and 9, Cadwell’s journey is a testament to the power of love and fortitude in the face of adversity. For Cadwell, motherhood in this season is about making a conscious decision to be mentally and emotionally present for her family, despite the weight of grief that sometimes threatens to consume her. To this, Cadwell shared, “Grief is unpredictable. It can hit you out of nowhere and you have to find a way to acknowledge it, sit with it for a minute and choose to proceed.”
Yet, amidst the darkness, Cadwell finds hope and joy in reflecting on how far she has come on this journey. “Sometimes I think to myself: ‘look at all you’ve been through and you’re still showing up, still marching on,’” she mused.
To other moms coping with a similar season of grief, Cadwell offers words of wisdom born from her own experience. She emphasizes the importance of finding support and leaning on loved ones during difficult times, acknowledging the power of community in healing. Cadwell’s story serves as a reminder of the value of showing up for one another, especially in times of grief.
In a world where grief can feel isolating and overwhelming, Cadwell’s message is one of hope, resilience and the enduring power of love to light the path forward, even in the darkest of times.
Season of Perseverance
Anne Stevens’ journey through motherhood speaks to the strength and staunch determination of the maternal spirit. For Stevens, the path to motherhood has been filled with twists and turns, as she navigates the intricacies of fertility and fostering with grace and perseverance.
Despite facing challenges in conceiving through traditional methods, Stevens refused to let despair dictate her journey. “I would definitely tell other women who want to start a family, but don’t know how, there are many ways to become a mother,” she stated.
Stevens recounted her own struggles with fertility, trying multiple rounds of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) to no avail. However, her journey took a new direction when she was inspired by families who fostered young children. “I got into fostering because I worked with a couple of families that fostered young kids,” she recalled.
With hope in her heart and a willingness to explore every avenue, Stevens pursued fostering with the possibility of adoption in mind. Nevertheless, her determination to become a mother did not waver. Her resilience shined through as she continued to explore alternative options, including embryo adoption, in her quest to expand her family. “I still wanted to try every option I could to have a baby and I learned about embryo adoption,” said Stevens.
Despite the uncertainties that lie ahead, Stevens remains steadfast in her commitment to fostering and her pursuit of motherhood. “I really hope it works but if not, I will continue to foster,” she asserted.
Stevens’ journey is a testament to the boundless love and dedication that defines the essence of motherhood — a journey marked by hope, resilience and the unyielding belief that, in the end, love will always find a way.
In Mount Pleasant, the seasons may change, but the spirit of motherhood remains a devoted beacon of love, resilience and community. As we celebrate the diverse tapestry of maternal journeys that grace our town, let us embrace the beauty of each season knowing that we are all in this together, bound by the timeless thread of maternal love.
