Bridge to Peace

On Sunday, June 21, 2015, thousands of people – East Cooper residents included – marched the Ravenel Bridge to promote peace following the horrific Emanuel AME Church shooting the previous week. All ages, races and demographics were present to share a singular vision of hope and peace throughout the Lowcountry and the world. Mount Pleasant Magazine is proud to share a few photos from our readers, submitted through Facebook.com/MountPleasantMagazine.

Pamela Uhles Brownstein: On the Mount Pleasant side of the Bridge of Peace event, I saw teenagers and young parents and families and older couples gathered in support of their community. I saw people giving out cold bottles of water. I saw people picking up trash on the road. A teenage girl with a peace sign on her shirt was handing out glow necklaces and gave them to my two young children. There were so many people, it was hard to get close to the bridge, but those in the back formed two lines on each side of the street, and we stood hand in hand. #charlestonunity

‪Michelle Gillette:‪ After the walk, we saw these touching sidewalk chalk tributes

‪Helen Crosby‪: The people of Charleston are hurting, also the people of SC. these grieving people are hurting their hearts are broken. They will heal they will never be the same there will always be an ache in their hearts. These grieving people of Charleston have shown the world their class We all need healing from this tragedy. May they feel the presence of their guardian angels (their love ones) and draw strength from them. May God bless each and everyone of them and give them the strength they need to heal.

‪Candice Nance‪: I participated in the Bridge of Peace event. I was not only amazed by the number of people willing to walk the bridge, but also by the traffic passing over the bridge as we did it. They rolled down their windows and showed their Love as well.

‪Tara Gallant‪: Wouldn’t want to be anywhere but here in this amazing city with beautiful people! I have to say that this is the most powerful thing I’ve ever done and I’m so proud of my city for demonstrating peace and love! History was made today: we will not stand for hate, we stand united! God wants us to love! Charleston has set the record straight, we are one big family! Can’t spell community without unity! #charlestonstrong
