Top tier golf talent is swinging into the Lowcountry this summer by way of a prestigious tournament that needs no introduction. Daniel Island will play host to the game’s rising stars at the 75th annual U.S. Junior Amateur Championship held July 24-29, 2023.
The Daniel Island Club’s 36-hole layout will be the site for the international competition. The private club’s two courses — Beresford Creek Course designed by Tom Fazio and Ralston Creek Course designed by Rees Jones — offer a true test with obstacles like saltwater marshes, tidal creeks and waterways in play on every shot.
“Our golf courses and community will provide an outstanding environment for the competitors to showcase their best game,” Daniel Island Club President and CEO Greg Keating told the U.S. Golf Association in a press release. “We look forward to partnering with the USGA to deliver this world-class amateur championship.”
Throughout its history, the Daniel Island Club has hosted five USGA qualifiers, including three U.S. Open local qualifiers as well as several collegiate events. This year’s contest will be the 21st USGA championships held in the Palmetto State.
The field will consist of 264 players from across the world who will vie for the coveted title, with the champion receiving an exemption into the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina and a spot in the 2023 and 2024 U.S. Amateur Championships.
“The commitment to Daniel Island is a testament to the enthusiasm of the club and the challenge that its two courses will provide to competitors in both stroke play and match play,” stated USGA managing director Mark Hill in a press release.
Established in 1948, the tournament is open to amateur golfers who have not reached their 19th birthday by the conclusion of the championship and who have a handicap not exceeding 4.4. Among past notable champions is three-time winner Tiger Woods, 1991-93, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time and the face of the sport in the modern era.
The U.S. Junior Amateur Championship is open to the public free of charge and tickets are not required.
