For more than 50 years, Ascue’s Auto Body & Paint Shop has been a trusted name in the Lowcountry and a testament to the power of family. The shop was founded by Timothy Ascue in 1968, a time when starting a business was no small feat. Since then, it has grown into a family legacy, with his children carrying on the values he instilled — hard work, resilience and a commitment to doing things right. Most recently, Ascue’s was honored by you, our Mount Pleasant Magazine readers, as The Best Auto Body Shop of 2025, a reflection of the dedication and craftsmanship that has defined the business for decades.
“My dad had a vision and took a risk,” Tory said. “He started this business from nothing, and we’ve worked hard to keep it going.” Tory and his siblings, Travis, Craig and Christi, grew up in the shop, learning the trade by watching and helping their father. For Timothy, it was about more than fixing cars — he takes pride in knowing he’s instilled the importance of hard work and the value of family in his children.
What sets Ascue’s apart is their reputation for taking on tough jobs. During the shop’s formative years in the ’60s and ’70s, they earned respect by doing the projects no one else wanted. “We were known for handling the hard stuff,” Tory said. “People would say, ‘Take it to Ascue’s; they’ll get it done.’” That word of mouth reputation for problem-solving and craftsmanship has been the backbone of their success.
One project stands out in Tory’s mind: a full restoration of a rare 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL convertible. It was a challenging job that required patience and skill, but the results were worth it. The customer’s appreciation for the care and effort the family put into the project is something Tory will never forget. Moments like that remind him why the business is so special. The recent growth in the Lowcountry has brought new opportunities, and while the business has expanded its reach, the family is focused on staying true to what their father built.
Looking back, Tory is proud of what his family has accomplished. “My dad showed us that hard work pays off,” he said. “We’ve kept this shop going for over 50 years because we love what we do and because of the support of our community.” Today, Ascue’s Auto Body & Paint Shop remains a symbol of what can be accomplished by a foundation of hard work and love for the craft.
