In 1978, Ray Hudson had a vision, not for himself, but for his son. While he had never been self-employed, he believed in the value of business ownership which he wanted his son to experience firsthand. So at just 21 years old, Cliff opened Hudson’s Import Service.
The reasoning was simple: if the business failed, he would still have a home, and only the business itself would be lost. If it succeeded, it would set the stage for something lasting. Nearly five decades later, Hudson’s Import Service is thriving, with a reputation built on honesty, passion and transparency.
Running a business with family can be challenging, but for Cliff, it’s a privilege. He is proud of the way his children have come to succeed in the business. His son, Gains, has a natural talent for mechanics and his daughter, Caitlin, has seamlessly stepped into a leadership role. Caitlin manages the business and often hears people say they could never work with their family, but she sees it differently. “Working with my dad and brother every day is truly a blessing. It makes coming to work enjoyable,” she said.
Despite working side by side, the family makes a clear distinction between business and home life. “What happens at Hudson’s, stays at Hudson’s,” Cliff said. They have a mutual understanding that work discussions don’t carry over into family time and this balance allows them to maintain both a strong business and strong relationships.
Hudson’s has developed its reputation on trust and education. Customers aren’t just given a list of repairs. “We don’t tell people what to do with their cars,” explained Cliff. “We empower them with the knowledge to make their own decisions.”
That philosophy has set them apart in an industry where trust is everything. Caitlin, as business manager, has often had to make tough decisions in her father’s absence. The most important lesson she’s learned from Cliff is how to balance the needs of the customer with the needs of the business. “The most important thing is making decisions that are in the best interest of the customer while remaining fair to the business,” she said. This simple philosophy has been their guiding principle for nearly five decades.
What started as a father’s dream has turned into a lasting family legacy. Now, with Caitlin and Gains helping carry the torch, Hudson’s Import Service is still family-owned, still trusted and still going strong.
Reflecting on how far they’ve come, Caitlin mused, “Hudson’s Import has been serving the Lowcountry for 47 years. Every year when our anniversary rolls around, I think about how long it’s been. I am so proud of my dad, my brother and our entire team.” Hudson’s has established itself as a community staple, and with your support they will continue to serve the Lowcountry for decades to come.
