A busy and dynamic publishing company in the Charleston area, specifically East Cooper, is looking for its next managing editor. In this role, you’ll have unique opportunities to witness both the editorial and the business sides of publishing, thanks to our small office setting and cohesive team. We are looking for someone with the following skills or the keen desire to learn them:
Great writing abilities – including the ability to interview someone in the community and get the story, then turn the interview into something that will engage our readers and respect our voice
Great editing abilities – including the skill to rework a story from another freelance writer and make it shine, while coaching the writer on what you changed and why in a constructive, not critical, fashion
Knowledge of AP style — including above-average grammar, spelling and sense of readability
Ability to work as part of a team – we take teamwork seriously. We are all creative and likely to share ideas on how to enhance our publications and our processes, and we need an editor who is both a leader and a team player
Organization – Our environment is creative, and we need someone who can corral creative ideas from conversations and lunches into usable content
Flexibility — In the magazine and media business, things are changing, and we need an editor who understands this
Love for People – No misanthropic types, please!
A Positive Attitude — Our team leaders are serious about looking on the sunny side of life
A Fierce Love for This Work — Please do not apply if you don’t love magazines, media and the transmission of ideas
If these sound like you, don’t wait! Send us a copy of your most recent resume and your best writing samples. If you don’t hear from us promptly, feel free to bug us a little — we’re always busy, and a previous editor says it worked for her.
