Fall into a Great Book Top Fall Picks

Posted by MPM Leave a Comment

A stack of books.

I unabashedly love fall: the waning humidity, pumpkin-spiced flavored everything, warm apple cider, orange mums in bloom and most of all, curling up under a cozy blanket on my couch and getting lost in a great book. To help curate my reading list for fall 2022, I visited my friends at The Village Bookseller, located at 761 Coleman Boulevard. The staff of the charming book … [Read more...]

“Falling” in love with Autumn Wines

Education First: Mount Pleasant’s Original Schools

Posted by MPM Leave a Comment

Mount Pleasant Academy historical marker. Inscription on front - In 1809, the SC General Assembly incorporated Mount Pleasant Academy to educate the children of Christ Church Parish. Funded by a legacy and a lottery, a schoolhouse was built, but its site is uncertain. At times, classes were held in private homes, the village church, and the courthouse. In 1860, the academy, at 140 Hibben Street, offered foreign languages and the classics. Inscription on back - In 1908, the academy was built at the corner of Pitt and Venning Streets. In 1938, a modern two-story public school building was constructed on Boundary Street and Hwy. 40 (now Simmons and Coleman). The old academy building on Pitt Street later became the first Moultrie High School. The present academy, on Center Street, was completed in the 1960s.

For decades, the town of Mount Pleasant has boasted the fact that its public schools consistently rank among the top in the state. Two of those amazing schools also tout a long history and prominent role in the field of education. During the 1700s, the only children who received formal schooling were those of affluent plantation owners who were taught by private tutors. … [Read more...]
